What is Biltricide (Praziquantel)?
Biltricide is an anthelmintic (an-thel-MIN-tik) or anti-worm medication. It prevents newly hatched insect larvae (worms) from growing or multiplying in your body.
Biltricide is used to treat infections caused by Schistosoma worms, which enter the body through skin that has come into contact with contaminated water. Schistosoma worms are found in Africa, South America, Middle Eastern countries, the Caribbean, and parts of Asia.
Biltricide is also used to treat infection with liver flukes, caused by a type of worm found in East Asia. This worm enters the body while eating contaminated fish.
Biltricide should not be used to treat parasitic infections in the eye.
Biltricide may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
How to use Biltricide
Use Biltricide as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
- Take Biltricide with a full glass of water during meals.
- Do not crush or chew before swallowing.
- Take your doses at least 4 hours apart but not more than 6 hours apart unless directed otherwise by your doctor.
- If you miss a dose of Biltricide, take it as soon as possible. If it less than 4 hours until your next dose, contact your doctor to see if you need to establish a new dosing schedule.

Possible Side Effects
Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when it is taken in normal doses. Side effects can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent.
The side effects listed below are not experienced by everyone who takes this medication. If you are concerned about side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor.
The following side effects have been reported by at least 1% of people taking this medication.
Many of these side effects can be managed, and some may go away on their own over time.
Contact your doctor if you experience these side effects and they are severe or bothersome. Your pharmacist may be able to advise you on managing side effects.
- abdominal pain
- diarrhea
- dizziness
- drowsiness
- fever
- headache
- loss of appetite
- muscle pain
- nausea
- tiredness
- vomiting
- weakness
Although most of the side effects listed below don't happen very often, they could lead to serious problems if you do not seek medical attention.
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:
- bloody diarrhea
- hives or itchiness
- rash
Stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention if any of the following occur:
- irregular or rapid heartbeat
- seizures
- signs of a serious allergic reaction (e.g., abdominal cramps, difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting, or swelling of the face and throat)
Some people may experience side effects other than those listed. Check with your doctor if you notice any symptom that worries you while you are taking this medication.
